Welcome to Wolf Dog, an illustrated newsletter by me, Shannon Colón. I share my creative process of connecting with myself via illustrated stories. If you’re new here, subscribe below for a weekly-ish existential crisis delivered to your inbox.
Vision vs. skills
A frustrating part of doing something new (like drawing and writing for this newsletter!) is the gap between vision and skills. I have a stunning visual of how a thing will look, what I want it to be, and I feel the beautiful details in my bones. And then I make it, and it’s truly underwhelming, but I believe in the creative process of showing up over and over again and putting in the time again and again. I find the whole process quite rewarding.
I’ve been rereading old journals, and it feels special when I come across something I’ve wanted in the past, that I’m doing in the present. Getting a private office, prioritizing my personal work over client work, and spending as much time as possible outside are all things I’ve been writing about for years. I gotchu, past self. We’re doing it.
Here’s to putting in the work. What are you investing your time in this week?
Lilacs in the air
There are no lilacs in this photo, but it sure does smell like them everywhere this week. 💜
